Scale of Positive & Negative Experience
Scale of Positive & Negative Experience:
The Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE) is a self-report questionnaire designed to measure an individual’s emotional experiences over a specified time period. It consists of 12 items, divided into two subscales: Positive Experience (SPANE-P) and Negative Experience (SPANE-N). Each subscale includes 6 items that assess the frequency of various positive and negative feelings, such as joy, contentment, sadness, and anger. Respondents rate how often they have experienced each emotion on a 5-point scale, ranging from “Very rarely or never” to “Very often or always.” The scores for the positive and negative subscales are summed separately, and a balance score can be calculated by subtracting the negative score from the positive score. The SPANE is used in research and applied settings to assess well-being, track changes in emotional experiences, and evaluate the impact of interventions aimed at improving emotional health.
